11 stunning images of the partial lunar eclipse known as the Beaver Moon eclipse

Even though it wasn’t a full lunar eclipse that happened — depending on location — late Thursday and Early Friday morning, the partial eclipse made for some gorgeous photos.

We’ve collected them below from around the United States and the world, as the partial eclipse made the moon look a little reddish at certain moments.

Why did this happen? Per USA TODAY: “A lunar eclipse happens when the sun, Earth and a full moon form a near-perfect lineup in space in what is known as syzygy, the American Astronomical Society said. The moon gradually glides into Earth’s shadow until most of the lunar disk turns from silvery gray to an eerie dim orange or red. Then events unfold in reverse order until the moon returns to full brilliance.”
