Vladimir Putin will meet with Iranian and Turkish leaders in Tehran this week. The trip will mark only his second trip outside of Russia since the Ukraine war began. In his previous trip outside of the country, Putin visited Tajikistan (home to Russiaâs largest military base outside of its own borders) to discuss Afghanistanâs stability. He then attended a summit in Turkmenistan to discuss energy policy with Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, and Turkmenistan. Given Russiaâs ongoing military campaign in Ukraine, these trips highlight the significance of Russiaâs relationship with these countries â and with Iran and Turkey in particular.
