Fentanyl overdose was something a Florida police officer witnessed this week that was much deadlier than any criminal. Their terrifying encounter serves as a startling reminder that illicit drugs may be highly hazardous – even for those sworn to protect and serve. They unwittingly came into contact with this powerful opiate during a routine traffic check.
Officer Bannick was performing her routine traffic check in Tavares, Florida, on a frigid December night when she discovered something unexpected. She swiftly took the necessary precautions to preserve what she thought to be illicit drugs as evidence and then started to go back to her patrol vehicle. However, shortly after that, Corporal O’Shea overheard an alarming cry of distress on his radio. In a race against time, he discovered Officer Bannick asleep behind the wheel. There was no obvious cause for what had transpired, so all that was left to be done was to wait for aid.
How dangerous is #fentanyl? Investigators believe a Tavares Police Officer caught wind of the drug during a traffic stop and ended up unconscious on the ground. Fellow officers gave her Narcan and likely saved her life. @fox35orlando https://t.co/UzI7Q57zhe
