Dutch man Gert-Jan Oskam is lame no more after a science experiment that signals to his brain and spinal cord via Bluetooth got him to walk again, albeit a bit shaky but still able to limp all the same, something he was unable to do previously after a bicycle accident took away his ability to walk.
Two small arrays were implanted into Oskamâs skull on each side above the motor cortex, the part of the brain that controls movement.
The electrodes detect signature electrical patterns in the motor cortex that mark when Oskam decides to stand or walk. The electrodes transmit the signals wirelessly to a notebook computer that has been programmed to recognize the transmissions. Oskam wears the computer in a backpack.
