Amid the fallout from his high-profile corruption trial, Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) has announced his resignation from the U.S. Senate, effective August 20. The decision comes after his conviction on July 16 for accepting an array of bribes, including cash, gold bars, and a luxury vehicle, in exchange for political favors.
Menendez, a long-serving Democratic lawmaker, was found guilty of using his influence to assist three business executives with securing deals with foreign officials and interfering in criminal investigations within New Jersey. His departure from the Senate was confirmed after his resignation letter was read during a session at 3 p.m. today, ending a chapter marred by scandal and legal battles.
“While I fully intend to appeal the jury’s verdict, all the way and including to the Supreme Court, I do not want the Senate to be involved in a lengthy process that will detract from its important work,” Menendez wrote in his letter announcing his resignation according to The Washington Post.
Rep. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) has been named the Democratic nominee for the 2024 Senate race to fill the seat soon to be vacated by Menendez. With the Senate scheduled for a recess from August 5 through September 6, Governor Phil Murphy (D-N.J.) has a window until early September to appoint a temporary successor.
The appointee would serve in the Senate for approximately four months. The period leading up to Menendez’s resignation on August 20 may allow him the opportunity to deliver a farewell speech on the Senate floor and continue his legislative duties, including voting on bills and nominations, until his official departure…
