Oprah Winfrey at the DNC on Wednesday urged voters to “choose common sense over nonsense” and vote for Kamala Harris.
Why it matters: Winfrey brought star power to the convention stage in her hometown of Chicago, and urged her fellow Independents to join her in voting Democratic this time around.
The big picture: Without naming Harris’ 2024 rival former President Trump, she referenced his comments to a conservative Christian crowd last month at which he said they “won’t have to vote anymore” if he reclaims the White House in November.
- “There’s a certain candidate that says, if we just go to the polls this one time, that we’ll never have to do it again,” Winfrey said.
- “Well, you know what? You’re looking at a registered Independent who’s proud to vote again and again and again, because I’m an American, and that’s what Americans do,” she added.
Zoom in: “There are people who want you to see our country as a nation of us against them,” Winfrey said.
- “People who want to scare you … people who have you believe that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe. That there’s a right way to worship and a wrong way to love. People who seek, first to divide and then to conquer,” she added.
- “But here’s the thing: When we stand together, it is impossible to conquer us.”
