South Africa: Major routes between the Free State and KwaZulu Natal closed due to heavy snow

Snow Repot Southern Africa closely monitoring the heavy snowfall in South Africa and Lesotho on 19 and 20 September 2024.

Various roads in this region are closed and people have been stuck in their vehicles since last night.

  • The N3 Toll Route remains CLOSED from Estcourt in KZN to Harrismith in the Free State with various other lane closures elsewhere along the route.
  • R103 – closed
  • R74 – Harrismith to Bergville – CLOSED
  • R74 – Greytown/Colenso Road – CLOSED
  • N11 – Ladysmith to Newcastle – CLOSED
  • N11 – Amajuba Pass – CLOSED
  • R617 – Kokstad to Underberg – CLOSED
  • R33 – Vryheid to Dundee – OPEN
  • R334 – Newcastle to Bloodriver/Vryheid – OPEN
  • N2 – Ingeli – Under Observation
  • R396 – Naudes Nek Pass – Covered in thick snow – CLOSED
  • R722 – Harrismith to Memel is covered in snow – CLOSED
  • R67 – Nico Malan Pass – CLOSED
  • R9-6 – Lootsberg Pass – CLOSED

Snow Report has been in contact with a school bus full of kids stuck in the snow on Oliviershoek Pass on the R74 through the night and local authorities are working on the situation…
