Seven of 10 States Move to Secure Abortion Protections in Their Constitutions

On Election Day, voters in around seven states voted to add abortion rights to their state constitutions. Originally, 10 states had the controversial measure on their ballots. Three states defeated the measure.

Arizona, Colorado, New York, Maryland, Missouri, Montana and Nevada all approved initiatives to expand or secure legal protections for abortion access.

Arizona will now change its abortion limit from 15 weeks to viability following a recent decision. In April, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld the state’s 160-year-old abortion ban, which imposes a prison sentence of two to five years for anyone performing or receiving the procedure, as reported by The Post Millennial. This decision marks a significant shift in the state’s abortion laws.

While not specifically relating to abortion, New York voters approved a measure that would allow an expansion to be made on its equal protection clause, which would protect rights relating to “sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy,” per the outlet
