German Bundestag passes vote of no confidence in Olaf Scholz

By Topwar

Olaf Scholz loses his post as German Chancellor, the Bundestag has passed a vote of no confidence in him. The new government will most likely no longer be headed by the Social Democrats.

The German Bundestag voted to dissolve the parliament with 394 votes, 207 against and 116 abstaining. Since 367 votes are needed for a vote, Olaf Scholz’s government is resigning with him at the helm, but will continue to serve for several more months until a new governing coalition is formed.

According to German law, Scholz will propose to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve parliament, who will have 21 days to do so and call new elections, which must take place no later than 60 days after the vote on the motion. Most likely, early elections will be held on February 23, 2025. Although there is an unlikely option that Steinmeier will leave a minority government headed by Scholz.
