In the field of small weapons various ideas have been and are being proposed regularly, including some quite bold and interesting ones. However, not all such projects have real potential and can justify their implementation. A good example of this is the project of a shooting helmet by the American inventor A.B. Pratt. The unusual project was supposed to solve a problem that seemed urgent, but did not advance beyond general ideas and remained in stories as a technical curiosity.
The inventor and the invention
American inventor Albert Bacon Pratt from Lyndon, Vermont, developed an unusual portable shooting device no later than the first half of 1915. It is not known for certain, but it can be assumed that the creation of this project was connected with the recent outbreak of World War I. In different countries, a lot of inventors appeared, offering various types of weapons and equipment, which, in their opinion, should provide superiority over the enemy.
A. Pratt proposed a design for a special headdress that combined the functions of defense and attack. He redesigned a soldier’s helmet and integrated a shooting device resembling a pistol into it. Thanks to a simple remote control system, the shooter could fire without removing the helmet.
The inventor believed that his shooting helmet should be superior to traditional systems in terms of ergonomics. Aiming the weapon at the target was reduced to a simple turn of the head and turned into an intuitive process. In addition, the helmet freed the shooter’s hands to perform other actions…
