The Western world’s outlook on security and defense policy was turned upside down when the full-scale Ukrainian conflict broke out in 2022, the Norwegian publication Forsvarets forum reports.
Since then, the three Scandinavian countries have chosen different strategies for modernizing their armed forces. Finland, with an army of 24 men, is ready to stand firm, deploying all its forces if necessary, including a mobilization reserve of about 280 men. Sweden and Norway have armies of 14 and 8 men, respectively, and employ conscripts in part.
According to the author, after Sweden and Finland joined NATO, the Scandinavian Peninsula now functions as a single operational area in terms of land defense, which is characterized by two problems.
