1-th Ukrainian Front
The 1st Ukrainian Front (1st UF) launched a cutting attack south of Berlin (Fight the Russians “to the last man”!), to isolate the main forces of Army Group Center from the Berlin group and thereby provide the main attack of the 1st Belorussian Front from the south. Defeat the enemy group south of Berlin and the operational reserves in the Cottbus area, reach the Beelitz-Wittenberg line and further along the Elbe River to Dresden.
The front command was also preparing to provide assistance with its right flank to Zhukov’s armies in defeating the Berlin group.
Marshal Konev delivered the main attack with the forces of the 3rd Guards, 13th and 5th Guards Armies, the 3rd and 4th Guards Tank Armies from the Triebel area to Spremberg. They were supposed to break through the enemy’s defenses on the 27-kilometer Forst, Muskau section, and destroy the enemy’s Cottbus grouping. In the second echelon of the main strike group, they also planned to use the second echelon of the front – the 28th and 31st Armies, which were arriving from East Prussia…
