New York City voters are learning this lesson the hard way as their mayoral frontrunner’s true agenda comes to light. When politicians dodge simple questions about their past statements, it’s usually because they know the truth would shock the very people they’re courting for votes. And in a city still reeling from violent crime, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Refusing to recant his previous statement from 2020 that called for defunding the police, New York Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani gave an evasive answer when asked if he wished he hadn’t made such a comment.
Mamdani has been elusive about his “defunding the police” statements after a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan left four people dead, including an NYPD officer. Earlier this week, he stated, “I am not running to defund the police.”
A Pattern of Deception
The most damning evidence of Mamdani’s deception came just hours after Monday’s horrific Park Avenue shooting. While the socialist candidate posted that he was “grateful for all of our first responders,” he conveniently failed to mention his December 2024 pledge to disband the very police unit that rushed to the scene. Are we really supposed to buy this? The Strategic Response Group (SRG), which Mamdani promised to eliminate as mayor, was among the first responders who stormed the building to contain the shooter.
This is the same elite unit that handles the city’s most dangerous situations—mass shootings, terrorist threats, and major emergencies. Yet Mamdani sees them as the enemy, tweeting that the SRG has “brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their First Amendment rights.” One police source put it perfectly: “He’s a joke. He only wants to ban SRG because they are the ones responding to his people’s protests.”
