The Texas House passed a motion on Monday to issue arrest warrants for more than 50 Democratic lawmakers after they failed to appear at the chamber to vote on a Republican-led effort to redistrict the state’s congressional maps.
Democratic lawmakers broke quorum by fleeing to blue states like Illinois and New York and by not returning when the chamber gaveled at 3 p.m. Their absence led state House Speaker Dustin Burrows to say he would immediately sign civil warrants to permit the chamber’s sergeant-at-arms and state troopers to arrest them and return them to the state Capitol.
“The sergeant-at-arms and any appointed by her are directed to send for all absentees whose attendance is not excused for the purpose of securing and maintaining their attendance, under warrant of arrest if necessary, until further order of the House,” Burrows said…
