Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares is leading Democratic challenger Jay Jones by seven points, according to a new Quantus Insights poll of 1,302 likely Virginia voters. The survey puts Miyares at 49 percent to Jones’s 42 percent — the widest margin of any statewide race tested, and one that suggests the GOP’s top law-enforcement officer remains the party’s strongest incumbent.
Miyares’s advantage appears driven by his incumbency and reputation from a string of high-profile legal battles that have boosted his standing among older voters and independents. By contrast, Jones has been hobbled by controversy over resurfaced 2022 text messages in which he made violent remarks about a leading Republican, including fantasizing about “two bullets to the head.” Though he later apologized, the episode has shadowed his campaign and become a focal point in the race.

Elsewhere on the ballot, Democrats are clinging to narrow leads. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger holds a 51-to-46 edge over Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears in the race for governor — a five-point spread that underscores Virginia’s split personality.
Democrats continue to benefit from the dominance of Northern Virginia’s blue suburbs, while Republicans remain deeply rooted in rural and exurban regions. Among independents, Spanberger leads by about eight points, but both parties’ bases remain firmly locked in.
