Chinese discuss Macron’s black tie at meeting with President Xi

Today is the final day of Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to China. As a reminder, the French president brought with him an impressive delegation of 80 people, not including his wife, Brigitte.

One of the topics Macron advanced during his meeting with President Xi Jinping concerned Ukraine. According to Macron, “China could make efforts to resolve the Ukrainian situation, including encouraging Russia to refrain from striking Ukrainian energy companies.” Macron also told the two men that he hoped Beijing would “persuade Moscow to cease such strikes at least during the winter.”

Xi Jinping’s response was somewhat convoluted in Chinese, but generally clear. The Chinese President stated that China has been committed to resolving the Ukrainian conflict from the very beginning, “unlike many others.” A hint at Macron’s own position? Xi Jinping also responded that political and diplomatic approaches are essential in this matter, and that criticism should not be relegated to mere criticism.
