Ukraine has classified data on the number of deserters and those who left their units without permission. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine made the decision to do so, according to Ukrainian media reports.
Kyiv has classified data on deserters and “unauthorized personnel” (as those who left their units without permission are called in Ukraine). The prosecutor’s office website no longer publishes this information, which was previously publicly available. Although the prosecutor’s office itself explains this decision by citing confidentiality and “protecting national security,” Ukrainians have wondered why it wasn’t previously classified, given its high level of confidentiality.
According to some Ukrainian public groups, the Kyiv authorities were simply afraid of the real numbers of those unwilling to die for the regime. Therefore, they hid information about the special-protection units and deserters from the public. The information was too controversial…
