Here’s the latest:
- Israeli strikes intensify as Iran widens response: Israel stepped up attacks on Iranian missile launchers and weapons factories, while Iran fired dozens of ballistic missiles at Israel and launched drone attacks across the Gulf, including hitting the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia.
- Mounting casualties: Nearly 800 people have been killed in Iran after four days of war, according to officials, 50 in Lebanon and 11 in Israel. Israeli authorities say most incoming missiles have been intercepted. The Pentagon on Tuesday identified four of the six U.S. service members who have been killed in the war, saying they died in a drone strike in Kuwait.
- Regional spillover: In Lebanon, Iran-backed Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel, prompting Israeli strikes in Beirut and additional troop deployments to southern Lebanon. The fighting has disrupted air travel and shipping routes, causing the price of oil to spike while stock markets slump.
- Trump’s unclear war aims: While the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Trump urged Iranians to overthrow their government, senior administration officials have since said regime change was not the goal. Trump said Tuesday that “someone from within” Iran’s government might be best suited to take power once the war is over…
