‘Baby Jessica’ famously rescued from well 38 years ago in the news again at 40

A Texas woman who was famously rescued from a well when she was a baby in 1987 has since been arrested for a domestic disturbance at her home.

Decades ago, the woman currently identified as Jessica McClure Morales became known nationwide as “Baby Jessica” after she fell into an eight-inch-wide well in her aunt’s backyard in Midland, Texas, at only 18 months of age.

The rescue operation that proceeded became a national sensation, with Americans all across the country tuning in to see her fate as workers toiled for 60 hours to retrieve “Baby Jessica” from 22 feet underground.

The rescue effort was reportedly broadcast on all major networks. The operation itself required drilling “a parallel shaft and a horizontal tunnel through rock to access the well.”

“The effort required specialized techniques, including waterjet cutting, after traditional equipment proved ineffective in the dense terrain,” according to Austin station KXAN.

During the rescue operation, the rescuers reportedly heard “Baby Jessica” singing.

“Paramedic Robert O’Donnell eventually navigated the cramped tunnel to reach her,” KXAN notes. “Nearly 60 hours after her fall, she was lifted to safety and rushed to a hospital.”
