Newly released Justice Department photos show the cache of weapons Cole Allen allegedly brought with him to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner during what prosecutors say was an attempted assassination of President Donald Trump and other top officials.
The evidence images, made public as part of the federal case, display a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol and multiple knives, including a large fixed-blade weapon. Additional gear recovered from Allen was also laid out and cataloged by investigators.
Prosecutors say Allen transported the weapons across state lines before carrying out the attack at the Washington Hilton, where Trump, administration officials and members of the press corps were gathered Saturday night.
Allen has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president, transporting firearms across state lines and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Authorities allege he opened fire after breaching a security checkpoint above the ballroom, sparking panic inside the hotel.
“Cole Allen now faces the full weight of federal justice,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said. “This alleged assassin was stopped because of the courage and professionalism of law enforcement officers who responded without hesitation by doing their jobs. Because of them, the President of the United States, Administration officials and all attendees at the dinner were safe. Make no mistake: deranged attacks on our elected officials will never go unpunished.”
