WARNING! COVID-19 Clinical Care: Certain Strains Of SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus Also Causes Skin Eruptions In COVID-19 Patients

COVID-19 Clinical Care: According to research findings outlined in a letter published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, certain COVID-19 patients might show manifestations of skin conditions and eruptions.

With a sudden rise of reports of patients presenting with skin conditions, including rashes, upon diagnosis with COVID-19, the American Academy of Dermatology has also created a registry for reporting skin manifestations seen in association with COVID-19.

In the registry, Health care professionals are asked to complete a survey if they have a COVID-19 patient who developed dermatologic manifestations or for dermatology patients with existing conditions who then develop COVID-19.

In the first study report, Dr Sebastiano Recalcati, M.D., from the Alessandro Manzoni Hospital in Lecco, Italy, described skin manifestations in COVID-19 patients. Cutaneous involvement was analyzed in patients hospitalized in the Lecco Hospital in Italy. A total of 148 positive patients were visited directly or indirectly; data were included for 88 patients.

Dr Recalcati found that 18 patients (20.4 percent) developed cutaneous manifestations: eight at onset and 10 after hospitalization.

It was found that the cutaneous manifestations were typically erythematous rash, widespread urticaria, and chickenpox-like vesicles (14, three, and one patient, respectively).

The main region involved was the trunk. There was low or absent itching, and lesions usually healed in a few days. No association was seen for cutaneous manifestations and disease severity.

Dr Recalcati added, “We may speculate that skin manifestations are similar to cutaneous involvement occurring during common viral infection. Indisputably we need more research to confirm and better understand skin involvement in COVID-19.”

Some genomic researchers and virologists speculate that perhaps these clinical manifestations are only peculiar to certain COVID-19 patients infected with specific mutated strains of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

More research is being warranted. Thailand Medical News keeps stressing that the COVID-19 should not be regarded as just one disease but rather every mutated strains should be considered separately as one disease as each has different modes of attacking human host cells and also the critical proteins in the cells and also each produces different clinical manifestations and perhaps each would need a different treatment protocol.
