The first major quake, (mag 6 or higher) of May, belongs to Japan and ironically it’s the 2nd major quake to rock the Fukushima area on the 10th anniversary of the Fukushima disaster of 2011. A magnitude 6.8 – 38 km ESE of Ishinomaki, Japan struck in the night with the epicenter of the quake less than 100 miles north of Fukushima. There are no reports of a tsunami warning or serious injuries.
Earlier this year in February, a very powerful magnitude 7.0 quake struck the East coast of Japan just 90 km East of Fukushima just weeks before the anniversary of the March 2011 Great Honshu quake which killed 22,000 people and destroyed the Fukushima Nuclear Plant, see map below.

Today’s major quake, mag 6 or higher is the 1st of May and the 64th of a very busy seismic 2021. At the same time last year, only 39 major quakes had been recorded, in 2019, 46, 2018, 37 and in 2017 just 28.
