On September 17, the Yemeni Air Force, which is allied to the Houthis, attacked Abha International Airport in the southern Saudi province of ‘Asir with a suicide drone.
Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the pro-Houthi wing of the Yemeni military, said a “high-value target” was struck with a Samad-3 drone. The drone, which was revealed last year, as a range of over 1,500 km.
In a statement, the spokesman said the attack on Abha International Airport was a response to the Saudi-led coalition’s recent airstrikes and its siege on Yemen.
The Houthis said the attack was successful. Nevertheless, the Saudi-led coalition claims that the suicide drone was intercepted before reaching its target.
“Joint Coalition Forces have intercepted and destroyed this evening (Thursday) a bomb-laden UAV launched systematically and deliberately by the terrorist Houthi militia to target civilians and civilian objects in [Khamis Mushait],” the coalition’s spokesman, Col. Turki al-Malaki, said in an official statement.
Earlier this month, the Houthis launched a ballistic missiles and three suicide drones at the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The coalition responded with two rounds of airstrikes on the Yemen’s Sanaa.
The Saudi-led coalition will likely respond in a similar manner to the Houthis’ new attack on Abha International Airport in the upcoming few days.
