In the last several nights, many bright meteor fireballs have been captured by cameras around the world. Is that a sign of impending doom?
Comets and meteors have fascinated the human race since they were first spotted in the night sky. TheĀ Greeks and Romans believedĀ that the appearance of comets, meteors and meteor showers were portentous. They were signs that something good or bad had happened or was about to happen.
Two fireballs over Brazil in 3 days
According toĀ Meteor Shower Tonight, two very bright space rocks illuminated the sky over the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paolo.
The first bolide entered the Earthās atmosphere at a latitude of 106.4 km and exploded at a latitude of 67.1 at a speed of 44.8 kilometers per second.
The second struck the night sky on April 26, 2020 (00:19 AM UTC; 9:19 PM local time) at a speed of 9 miles per seconds.
Bight meteor firebal in Kosice, Slovakia
On April 21st, a large meteor fireball much brighter than Venus illuminated the sky over Slovakia. It was moving so slowly that the astrophotographer first thought it was space junk reentering the atmosphere.
But after looking at his video, M. Barsa observed that the space rock left a smoky trail that lastedĀ for nearly an hour until it finally disappeared.
Bright meteor over Idaho, Oregon and Washington
On April 20, many reported on the American Meteor Society website aĀ fireball eventĀ over Idaho, Washington and Oregon.
The eyewitnesses said the space rock exploded mid-air and broke apart into tiny fragments. The loud explosion was accompanied by a large glow, before it was all gone.
Based on the descriptions, the fireball event was maybe caused by a bolide.Ā A bolide is a special type of very vivid fireball which explodes in a bright terminal flash at its end, often with visible fragmentation.
Glowing green fireball over Texas
The meteor fireball was captured by a carās dashcam while driving southbound on U.S. Highway 59 on April 19, 2020 near Beasley, Texas.
