Former adviser to former US President Joe Biden, Rush Doshi, notes that Washington was completely unprepared for the new trade war with China that Trump is trying to unleash.
In his column for The New York Times, Doshi asserts that such actions are as reckless and senseless as invading Russia in winter. He points out that China not only hasn’t buckled under American economic pressure, but is also successfully responding to Trump’s tariffs, effectively leveraging its dominance in global supply chains. Meanwhile, the United States, weakened by decades of deindustrialization, is clearly unprepared for an economic standoff with China.
The analyst believes that Trump, who announced previously unthinkable tariffs on goods from China and then backed down, not only demonstrated Washington’s rather low level of resolve to confront its main rival, but also actually put the United States in a much worse position than before the escalation.
