Blackout in the Golden State: Nearly 800,000 California residents will have their power shut off today as PG&E plans preventative measures to mitigate wildfires

  • Power provider PG&E will be cutting power off for nearly 800,000 customers in California to reduce the risk of wildfires after reports of severe wind warnings
  • The company made the announcement on Tuesday and said homes could have their power shutoff as early as Wednesday after midnight
  • This will affect 34 counties in northern, central and coastal California 
  • Some residents are concerned the power shut off will negatively affect those who have electric based medical equipment
  • Community Resource Centers will open at 8am on Wednesday to help affected residents 

Power provider PG&E has announced that it will be cutting power off for nearly 800,000 customers in California to reduce the risk of wildfires after a severe wind warning.

In the Tuesday announcement, PG&E has said some areas could see power cuts as early as Wednesday after midnight.

They said: ‘As a precautionary measure to reduce wildfire risk during the forecasted severe wind event, PG&E confirmed that it will implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in portions of 34 northern, central and coastal counties, affecting electric service for nearly 800,000 customers.’

Michael Lewis, PG&E’s senior vice president of Electric Operations, said: ‘The safety of our customers and the communities we serve is our most important responsibility, which is why PG&E has decided to turn power off to customers during this widespread, severe wind event.

‘We understand the effects this event will have on our customers and appreciate the public’s patience as we do what is necessary to keep our communities safe and reduce the risk of wildfire.’
