On Monday, the National Park Service made an announcement regarding the future of a Confederate statue that was knocked over during the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020.
The statue, featuring Brigadier General Albert Pike, had previously stood outside the Metropolitan Police Department Headquarters in Washington D.C., and was the only statue of a Confederate leader in the nation’s capital. But following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests and riots that plagued American cities, Pike’s likeness was removed using ropes. The demonstrators then poured accelerant on the statue and lit it on fire.
