Earlier this week Brazil’s High Court ruled that residents can be imprisoned for using slurs and openly using what are deemed as “homophobic slurs.”
Gay Community News (GCN) reports that the Supreme Federal Court (STF) voted 9-1 August 22th, decreeing ‘homophobia’ as a punishable offence.
Article 20 of the updated Brazillian Penal Code states that practizing, inducing, or inciting discrimination “based on race, colour, ethnicity, religion, or national origin” is punishable by 1 to 3 years in jail, including a hefty fine.
Justice Edson Fachin, lead judge on the case, wrote in his ruling that protecting LGBTQ+ citizens under the law was a “constitutional imperative,” Pink News reported…
