  • Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman was taken out of prison to be treated in a central Pennsylvania hospital for a ‘cardiac event’
  • The 70-year-old was taken for treatment to an unnamed hospital near his FCI Loretto low-security prison where he is serving his seven year sentence
  • He is said to be recovering but was due to appear in a state court in New York Wednesday; attorney says hearing will go ahead in his absence
  • Heart treatment was revealed minutes after his former deputy Rick Gates, who flipped on him for the Robert Mueller probe, got just 45 days in weekend jail
  • Gates had wanted probation and prosecutors supported him but judge said drug dealers who flip still get custody – so Gates needed to get it too
  • Manhattan district attorney is prosecuting Manafort on mortgage fraud charges which would be beyond the reach of a pardon from Donald Trump

Former Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort has been hospitalized after suffering a ‘cardiac event’ he suffered while suffering a seven-year jail sentence, it emerged Tuesday.

Manafort, 70, was to appear in court in New York Wednesday, although his attorney has been informed he won’t be showing and the hearing will go ahead without him.

He is being treated at a hospital close to FCI Loretto, the federal prison outside Altoona, central Pennsylvania, where he is serving his sentence.

He has been recovering since Thursday, ABC News reported, and is being guarded by prison officers.

He was expected to be released from the hospital shortly.

News of his heart-related issue broke on a day when Manafort’s longtime deputy, Rick Gates, received a far more lenient sentence of just 45 days in prison and three years’ probation.

Gates had been cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecutors, who put away Manafort for a variety of tax and fraud charges related to millions of undeclared income he stashed in overseas accounts.

In contrast to his deputy walking free except for weekends, the one-time multi-millionaire Washington D.C. fixer isn’t scheduled to be released until Christmas 2024.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who also oversaw Manafort’s case, allowed Gates to serve his sentence on an intermittent basis.

He met with investigators more than 50 times, and his testimony was critical to prosecutors who were able to put away Manafort.

Gates worked with Manafort both during his time making millions as an advisor doing work in Ukraine for a pro-Moscow political party, and then as a campaign chair who Donald Trump brought aboard his operation to oversee the bid to amass delegates to ensure victory in his presidential campaign.

In recent months, Ukraine has again burst onto the political scene, this time in the Democratic effort to impeach Trump over his efforts to get Ukraine to investigate the Bidens in what Democrats call an abuse of power.

Manafort, 70, has experienced health issues before, appearing in court in 2018 in a wheel chair.

His lawyers confirmed he suffered from gout while imprisoned.
