A small neighborhood in Tempe, Phoenix, Arizona, touted as a being a car-free and rental-only community has opened, referred to as a “5-minute city,” and it has attracted some recent attention.
The innovative rental community called Culdesac Tempe was first conceptually announced in the fall of 2020, putting up an initial $170 billion to fund its creation, with the goal of becoming the first car-free neighborhood in the United States, as detailed by The New York Times.
According to the developer’s website, Culdesac Tempe is self-described as a 5-minute city. The firm says, “You’re just 5 mins away from all your essentials at the corner market, a quick tune-up at Archer’s Bikes, and a cozy dinner at Cocina Chiwas.”
