Chief Justice John Roberts publicly rebukes President Trump’s call to impeach judge

Chief Justice John Roberts publicly rebuked President Trump’s call to impeach a federal judge seeking to halt deportation efforts.

The chief justice’s rare remarks were made just hours after Trump demanded the impeachment of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, an Obama appointee, who had prevented Trump from using the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to quickly deport Venezuelan migrants the administration has identified as gang members.

“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose,” Roberts said in a statement.
