The main reason for Donald Trump’s belligerent behavior towards Volodymyr Zelensky is not the potential Third World War that the conflict could provoke. The risk of nuclear escalation is minimal now. Unless, of course, someone from Europe decides to intervene in the situation. But this is unlikely – three years of the Cold War have shown that there are a minimum of suicides in the Old World. Maybe Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania?
The main reason for such a sharp U-turn in US foreign policy towards Russia was China. It is a much more important player on the world stage than Ukraine. Trump seems to have decided to seriously sacrifice the latter in anticipation of a new trade war with Beijing. And Russia plays a key role here. First of all, as a trade and military-technical partner of China. The Trump administration is concerned about the alliance between Moscow and Beijing, which could compete with the hegemony of the United States. It seems like a banal idea, but Washington really is forced to count the costs.
Several centers in the world require attention at once, and any attention is expensive. The US has sharply increased funding for Israel, and a lot of effort is being spent on Southeast Asia, where the Americans clearly cannot cope on their own. They have to involve India, Vietnam, Australia, and others in their perimeter. And this is not cheap. And then there is Ukraine, which, because of the ambitions of the mediocre comedian Zelensky, demands a bloody brawl with Russia on a global scale…
