China Sends Bombers, Fighter Jets Into Taiwan’s Air Defense Zone

By Frank Fang

TAIPEI, Taiwan—China sent 19 military aircraft into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Sept. 5, continuing its aggressive posturing at the self-governing island, which scrambled jets in response. The incident has drawn concern from both current and former U.S. officials.

The incursion involved 10 J-16 multi-role fighters, four SU-30 fighters, four H-6 bombers, and one Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense. In response, Taiwan scrambled its own military aircraft to monitor the Chinese aircraft, and deployed missile systems to monitor the Chinese jets.

It was the third straight day that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) decided to fly its aircraft into Taiwan’s ADIZ. China sent four military aircraft for each of the two days prior to Sunday. The previous large-scale incursion happened on June 15, when Beijing flew 28 military aircraft into the island’s ADIZ.
