Colorado elementary teacher arrested after allegedly seeking sex with child online

A physical education teacher at a Colorado elementary school was arrested Thursday after allegedly looking for sex with a child online.

Colorado Springs resident Joshua Silverthorn, 34, faces one felony charge of internet exploitation of a child following a joint investigation between the Colorado Springs Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Durango Police Department into Silverthorn’s apparent solicitations.

The investigation, which began in March, involved an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old girl whom Silverthorn purportedly contacted, the Durango Herald reported. Investigators were able to identify Silverthorn by electronic messages and pictures.

Silverthorn’s conversation with the incognito officer allegedly turned sexual and continued over the next several months, police said. He was taken into custody Thursday at 6:45 a.m., and authorities executed search warrants at his home and workplace.

Silverthorn, a teacher at Monterey Elementary School in Colorado Springs, was placed on administrative leave, a school district spokesperson said, according to the Durango Herald.
