Container ships instead of frigates: The US Navy is looking for a means of increasing the total salvo of warships

Amid delays in the shipbuilding program, the US Navy is exploring the possibility of placing vertical missile launchers on a new type of small ship or on amphibious and auxiliary pennants.

At the moment, there is not an increase, but, on the contrary, a reduction in combat potentialĀ fleet. Thus, in fiscal year 2025, 19 ships will be decommissioned, and only 6 have been ordered. As a result, by 2027, the number of TPUs on watercraft will decrease, which will affect the total weight of the Navy salvo.

The main reason for this is the decommissioning of the Ticonderoga class cruisers, each of which has 122 TPU cells. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers with 96 launchers are being built to replace them, but the pace of work remains low. It is also planned to decommission 4 Ohio nuclear submarines, each of which can be equipped with 154 cruise missiles. The prospects for the Zumwalt project are unclear – the possibility of equipping three ships to carry hypersonic missiles is being considered.
