Democrats Flip Mayoral Seat Held By Republicans For Almost A Decade

A one-off or a sign to come?

In a shocking election outcome, Democrat Mindy O’Neall flipped the Fairbanks, Alaska, mayoral seat Tuesday night for the first time in a decade, ousting the incumbent, conservative David Pruhs. O’Neall received 1,808 votes (54%) and Pruhs received 1,528 votes (45.7%), according to unofficial election night results from the city of Fairbanks.

Pruhs chalked up his loss to low voter turnout and the fact that O’Neall had the backing of the state’s Democratic Party, calling it a “perfect storm.” In Fairbanks mayoral elections, a candidate’s party affiliation is not listed next to their name, but the city has elected Republicans since 2016.
