
Federal officials have launched a fresh inquiry into California’s distribution of welfare benefits, focusing on whether programs designed to aid certain non-citizens are improperly supporting illegal immigrants using federal funds.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued subpoenas this week to Los Angeles County seeking records connected to a long-running state cash assistance program.
The move, spearheaded by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), targets California’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI), which provides monthly benefits to elderly, blind or disabled non-citizens who are ineligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
While CAPI is funded by the state, DHS contends that federal taxpayer dollars may be indirectly sustaining illegal immigrants who do not qualify for federal benefits, according to Fox News…
