DSFT rocket projectile for MLRS and HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems

By Topwar

A new family of DSFT rockets is being developed for the US Army. These munitions are intended for existing multiple launch rocket systems and are expected to improve their key combat and economic characteristics. The new products have now left the design stage and reached the range testing stage. Such rockets are expected to enter service within the next few years.

Cheap add-on

The main ammunition load of the American M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS is now the GMLRS series of rockets. These are guided missiles with a flight range of about 90 km. They are supplied in standardized six-seat transport and launch containers. The cost of one missile of this family is at least 160-170 thousand dollars.

The US Army highly values GMLRS ammunition, but also finds reasons for criticism. Thus, combat experience has shown that the characteristics of these products are excessive for some tasks and purposes. In this regard, a proposal has recently appeared to develop a smaller missile with reduced technical characteristics and reduced cost.

In late 2024, the DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center launched the Direct Support Fires Technology (DSFT) project to develop a new missile that would meet the Army’s updated requirements.

The direct development and production of the missiles was entrusted to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems and Anduril Industries. The participation of various subcontractors was also expected.

Shells at the firing range

For several months, work on the DSFT topic was carried out behind closed doors. In July 2025, the Pentagon first spoke about the existence of this project and reported on its first successes. By the time of the official press release, they had managed to go through the design stage and manufacture a pilot batch of missiles and related devices.
