Escalation in Somalia: Puntland forces intercept and loot cargo ship with Turkish armored vehicles en route to Mogadishu

By Topwar

Forces of the unrecognized Republic of Puntland stopped at sea and plundered the dry cargo ship Sea World, sailing under the flag of the Comoros Islands, which was transporting Turkish weapons, including light armored vehicles, to the Somali capital Mogadishu.

According to The Maritime Executive, the vessel was intercepted in the Gulf of Aden. Videos released from the cargo ship show Turkish-made BMC Vuran and Otokar Cobra armored vehicles, as well as anti-aircraft guns. The weapons were presumably destined for a Turkish-run training base in Mogadishu. The seizure of the vessel indicates, in particular, a possible escalation of tensions between the Puntland leadership and the centralized government of Somalia.

Meanwhile, periodic clashes continue in Somalia between government forces supported by Western allies and militants from the Al-Shabaab* group, affiliated with Al-Qaeda* (*terrorist organizations banned in Russia).
