Republican Michigan Rep. John James believes the fate of President Donald Trump’s agenda in the upcoming midterm cycle could run through the battleground state.
James, an Iraq War veteran and a vocal ally of President Donald Trump, announced his 2026 gubernatorial run to succeed term-limited Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on April 7. The two-term lawmaker argued he is the best candidate positioned to flip the governorship red and advance the president’s America First agenda in Michigan, in an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“We have a remarkable opportunity to carry President Trump’s agenda into the states,” James, a former Army helicopter pilot, told the DCNF. “It’s very important. If we don’t win it doesn’t matter. Winning matters. And we have to start winning again in Michigan.”
“We can’t play small ball anymore. We can’t be cowardly conservatives,” the congressman added. “We have to be bold. Without a strong top of ticket, we will lose seats in Michigan that jeopardizes President Trump’s agenda.”
The need for a strong Republican candidate at the top of the swing state’s midterm ballot was at the top of James’ mind over the course of the interview.
