During the Cold War, the main supplier of anti-aircraft missiles missile complexes on the world arms market was the Soviet Union. In the 1960s-1980s, the USSR exported several hundred S-75 and S-125 air defense systems to its allies and developing countries, several countries also received long-range S-200VE systems, and just before the collapse of the Warsaw Pact, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria managed to transfer one division of the S-300PMU multi-channel anti-aircraft system.
In the 1990s and the first two decades of the 21st century, Russia continued to dominate the ground-based air defense segment. The absolute bestseller in terms of sales volumes were the export modifications of the S-300P system, delivered to Greece, China and Syria. At the same time, contracts were signed with a number of countries for the radical modernization of the S-125 SAM system.
