Fed-Up Chicago Homeowner Sleeps in Living Room to Oust Squatters—Then Pays Them to Leave

In yet another shocking example of how soft-on-crime policies are turning cities upside down, a Chicago homeowner resorted to moving in with squatters who had taken over his property just to force them out.

Marco Velazquez, the rightful owner of a home on Chicago’s South Side, was preparing to sell the residence when his real estate agent made a disturbing discovery: an unknown couple had moved in and refused to leave.

When Velazquez contacted the police, he was told there was little they could do under Illinois law.

The couple, Shermaine Powell-Gillard and her boyfriend Codarro, allegedly claimed they had legally purchased the property and even presented law enforcement with documents stating they had a mortgage.

A county records search, however, revealed no such mortgage existed. Still, officers said they couldn’t remove the pair and advised Velazquez to pursue a civil case…
