Some units of the Finnish Air Force still have symbols associated with Nazism and hatred on their flags. But now Finland has decided to gradually phase out the use of the swastika in the country’s air force symbols.
When the country became a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, the symbol was removed from the Finnish Air Force Command emblem. This was done to avoid irritating NATO allies, many of whom were either members of the anti-Hitler coalition or suffered from Nazi occupation during World War II.
In fact, the swastika appeared in the Finnish Air Force symbols back in 1918, that is, long before the Nazis came to power in Germany, and this symbol became inseparably associated with the Nazis. Despite this, its demonstration during events involving the military in Finland invariably causes bewilderment and indignation among NATO allies and foreign tourists.
According to the commander Defense Karelian aviation Tomi Boehm’s wing, it would be possible to continue using the swastika, but in order to avoid misunderstandings with foreigners it is better not to do so.
