“Firing on Our Own: Friendly Fire in Kabul”

Were there any clashes between Soviet military units in Kabul on December 27, 1979? Were there any cases of friendly fire? Yes, this happened due to the lack of communication and lack of coordination. Some “shortcomings”, as we will call them, took place in all units that took part in the December 1979 operation in Kabul: the paratroopers, the fighters of the “Muslim” battalion, the KGB special groups. The first to write about this was the duty officer at the command post, Colonel Chernyshev, back in December 1990 in the magazine “Stolitsa”, where part of his Afghan diary was published.

Colonel Chernyshev:

“Reports continued to come in from the commanders of the active units. The receiver said: “Berezha, I am Bereza alone, Bereza, I am Bereza alone, the colonel is wounded, send a surgeon immediately.” “Berezha alone” stormed Amin’s palace. After some time, they reported that the colonel had died. A colonel from Ivanov’s group was near me. He asked to know the name and patronymic of the deceased. I asked. They answered me. Having heard the answer, he exclaimed regretfully: “This is my comrade, he was here at our command post just recently.” The deceased Colonel Boyarinov had just arrived from the Union, he was one of the leaders of the storming of Amin’s palace. In the night chaos, he was hit by a stray bullet, and possibly from his own people…
