German media: In Germany, the middle class is shrinking faster than in other EU countries

By Topwar

If until recently in Germany 80% of the inhabitants considered themselves to be middle class, then recently this figure has dropped to 63%. This is written by the German magazine Der Spiegel. As the newspaper notes, the reduction of this social stratum at first glance seems insignificant, but in comparison with other European countries, it is quite noticeable.

So, according to a study conducted by the Ifo Institute in Munich, if in 2007 65% of the population belonged to the middle class, then by 2019 this figure had decreased by 2%, amounting to 63%.

It should be noted that in this case industrialized countries were taken into account. Thus, the definition of a person of the middle class, adopted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, is understood as one who has at his disposal from 75% to 200% of the median income. For single people, this income ranges between 17475 euros and 46 thousand euros as of 2019. For couples without children, it ranges from 26212 euros to 69 euros. Couples with two children can usually classify themselves as middle class if their income is in the range of 36698 to 97860 euros per year.
