Some aspects of the German economy during World War II were shrouded in, let’s say, an atmosphere of understatement. These included, for example, the production and consumption of synthetic fat. For a long time, this topic existed in the form of isolated mentions, but the progress of digitalization and the scanning of some interesting documents now allow us to examine this issue in somewhat more detail.
This question is all the more important because, just in case, it is necessary to have a set of mastered and tested technologies that allow producing food products from non-food raw materials. German technology was apparently the first to implement such production on an industrial scale, and it had options that generally expand the list of sources of possible raw materials.
I will say right away that in German economic and food materials of that time, Fett (fat) is all products formed by fatty acids, both of plant and animal origin.
Half of the needs
Before the war, fats played a very important role in the German food ration. According to the leading expert on food supply Wilhelm Ziegelmayer, Germany in the 1937 borders consumed about 1,5 million tons of fat, or 22 kg per person per year (including about 10 kg of lard, 10 kg of butter and the rest – edible fats for baking and cooking). In the daily ration, which was 2910 calories, fats made up 545 calories, or 18,7%. Only 60 grams of fat provided so many calories.

Fats could be of either plant or animal origin. Ziegelmayer calculated that a hectare of German land could produce 120 kg of fat if used as pasture for dairy cows, 370 kg if used to grow grain for fattening pigs, 720 kg if grown potatoes for fattening pigs, and 750 kg if grown oilseeds.
