Ghana Set To Sign Stringent Anti-LGTBQIA+ Law That Jails Residents Over ‘Willful Promotion, Sponsorship Or Support Of Activities’

Ghana has sparked ire from the West after the African nation passed a tough LGTBQIA+ law that jails residents for the “willful promotion, sponsorship or support of LGBTQ+ activities,” sentencing those found guilty up to five years in prison.

Though there is some pushback, The Guardian reports that ‘the legislation is widely supported in Ghana, where [President Nana] Akufo-Addo has said gay marriage will never be allowed while he is in power.’ The vote passed with ease with an unanimous voice vote. The bill was largely supported by Christian, Muslim, and other traditionalist leaders.

The bill has been challenged by the country’s Supreme Court. The President said the bill has not reached his desk yet, and is waiting to hear the results of the court’s findings.

I have learnt that, today, a challenge has been mounted at the Supreme Court. In the circumstances, it would be as well for all of us to hold our hands and await the decision of the Court before any action is taken.

Backlash from nations abroad have already started to swell.

Africa News reported: ‘Ghana’s finance ministry has warned the country stands to lose a substantial amount of financing from international banks estimated at USD$3.8 billion over the next five to six years.’

The Presidency may have a structured engagement with local conservative forces such as religious bodies and faith-based organizations to communicate the economic implications of the passage of the ‘Anti-LGBTQ’ Bill and to build a stronger coalition and a framework for supporting key development initiative that is likely to be affected.
