Gross Miscalculations About Key Bridge Reconstruction Costs and Timetable Stun Marylanders

Most residents of Maryland will tell you that they knew the initial timeline for the reconstruction of the Key Bridge in Baltimore and estimated costs of the reconstruction were way off. They knew it the day the statements were made in 2024.

The bridge collapsed in March of 24 after it was hit by the Dali Container Ship. Six construction workers were killed in the collapse. An official statement about the incident will be published by the NTSB who met today.

At the time, Governor Wes Moore and officials from the Maryland Transit Authority estimated the cost of the rebuild to be around $2 billion dollars and stated that construction of the bridge would be finished in 2028. The Biden Administration pledged it’s help in the project.

Yesterday the true estimate and timeline were released. The cost of the bridge is now estimated to be $4.3-$5.9 billion and will not be complete until 2030. Reasons for the cost increase and extended time period are attributed to rising material costs and the implementation of a robust pier protection system to prevent future incidents.
