My mother told me that when she was a baby the practice was soon as a pregnant woman learned she was pregnant she was literally put to bed to take no chance on miscarriage, and baby born at home. If doctor could not come then with help of midwife or none. I was a breech birth weighing 10 pounds in a 1941 mother, born at home, nearly killed my mom, had doctor, and that was the science then, and morality to save the child at all cost.
Not so now.
