A Somali member of Parliament says his years of warnings about corruption in Somali and the U.S. have been ignored by American officials, enabling the exploitation of Somali families and U.S. tax dollars.
Abdillahi Hashi Abib, who serves on Somalia’s parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, spoke out following Wednesday’s State Department statement on a raid by the Somali government targeting U.S. aid — amid a wave of Somali-connected corruption news stateside.
The under secretary for foreign assistance, humanitarian affairs and religious freedom acknowledged reports that Somali officials “destroyed a U.S.-funded World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse and illegally seized 76 metric tons of donor-funded food aid for vulnerable Somalis,” adding that the Trump administration maintains “a zero-tolerance policy for waste, theft and diversion of life-saving assistance.”
